With all the talk about how scoring has changed in the NHL and the emergence of a new style of scoring, we decided to take a look back at the previous 15 years and see how much of an impact scoring has had on the game.

That list includes the most notable goal scores in each of those 15 seasons, but also some highlights from other eras.

Let’s take a quick look at the 15 goals that have been the defining moments of the game, whether it was the first, second, or third goal.

* * * 2001-02 – Columbus Blue Jackets win 2-1 vs. Calgary Flames * * “This is what I was working for,” says Scott Niedermayer, who won the Hart Trophy in the 2001-2002 season.

“This was the time where I was finally getting a taste of what I’d be up against if I ever got the chance to play in the big leagues.

It was a great team win and it’s something that I’m going to remember forever.”

* * 6-3, 7-3 in 2003-04 * * It was the third game in a row that the Blue Jackets were without a win, and it would be the first time they lost three consecutive games.

That was good for a 1-0 lead entering the third period and gave the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead in the second period.

Then, in the third, Matt Hunwick gave the Jackets the lead again, this time with his first career goal.

“I was just hoping to get the puck up to the net and get some shots up,” Hunwick said.

“It was the perfect opportunity to score.

We were coming out and trying to score, so it was a perfect opportunity for me.”

* 6/16/03: Nashville Predators defeat Ottawa Senators 3-2 in overtime * * In a game the Predators had to overcome a 5-0 deficit to take the lead in regulation.

“We were just trying to get it to overtime,” Predators goalie Pekka Rinne said.

“(We were) trying to hold on to the lead and keep it tight.”

* 7/5/04: Carolina Hurricanes beat Ottawa Senators 2-0 in overtime.

The Hurricanes would win that game 2-2.

* 9/14/07: Tampa Bay Lightning beat Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The Lightning won the game 3-0, but they were 0-5-1 in their past 10 games.

“Our goal this year is to be in the playoffs,” Lightning forward Matt Carle said.

* 11/16, 12/20, 1/5, 2/4, 3/6, 4/4: Montreal Canadiens win 3-3 vs. Florida Panthers * * Carey Price scored two goals for the Canadiens in the first period, but defenseman Victor Bartley made his presence felt in the shootout.

Bartley had a rebound that bounced off goalie Tuukka Rask’s pads and into the net, and the puck went to a teammate on the other side of the goal.

Bartly had two goals and an assist in the game for the Habs, and he became just the second player in franchise history to score a hat trick in a playoff game.

* 6, 7, 8, 11/23, 1, 2, 3, 4: Philadelphia Flyers beat Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 * * Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere had three assists and a plus-two rating in the loss to the Hurricanes.

He was credited with a goal in the fourth period and two assists in the win.

* 5/21, 6/23: Chicago Blackhawks win 4-2 vs. Carolina Hurricanes * * After the Blackhawks scored the game-winner in overtime to clinch the Stanley Cup for the first straight year, they were still looking to take another step forward.

The Blackhawks led 2-3 heading into the third.

That’s when Chicago forward Kyle Connor made a nifty move and beat Carolina goaltender Martin Jones with a wrist shot that made it 3-on-2 for Chicago.

“The first period of the second, it was just a really nice feeling,” said Dallas Stars forward Shawn Horcoff, who was credited for a point.

“That’s when we really started to take off.

We just went for it and that was our first goal.

We’ve got a couple more like that in the series.”

* 5, 6, 10/30, 11, 12: Tampa Lightning win 3/12/07 vs. Detroit Red Wings * * The Lightning dominated the second half of the night, beating Detroit 4-0.

* 7, 9, 10: Boston Bruins win 5-3 * * Bruins goaltender Tuukke Nielsen stopped 32 shots to win his fourth straight game, tying a franchise record.

* 4/28, 5/17, 7/12, 8/10, 10, 11: Anaheim Ducks win 3, 2 vs. Colorado Avalanche * * Corey Perry scored two of the
