FOX Sports has been tracking running backs for over 50 years and we have yet to track a single player who has had more rushing touchdowns than the Hall of Famer who was a Hall of Fame quarterback in the 1950s and ’60s.

But that all changed Sunday when 30-year-old San Diego State University senior David Williams, who played for the Rams from 2000-04, ran for 1,737 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions in his first game as a pro.

It was the second-highest single-game rushing total in league history, trailing only Adrian Peterson’s 1,937-yard, six touchdowns in 2013.

And it’s also the second straight year Williams has been the most efficient running back in the league.

That was the case last season, when Williams had 1,839 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

But Williams ran for 709 yards and three touchdowns last year, and he was also named a first-team All-American and was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Champions.

Now, it’s the second consecutive year that Williams is named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Williams is now tied with Reggie Bush and John Riggins for second all-time behind only Brett Favre.

And Williams has more rushing TDs in a season than any other running back, with 16 and 13.

He has 1,863 rushing yards, third-most in NFL history behind the 2,898 yards he had in 2009.

The NFL has seen a lot of running backs struggle over the past couple years, but Williams was just the latest in a long line of successful players to break through.
